Building Bridges: How Pharmacists & Social Workers Can Partner to Address Opioid Use Disorder

This presentation explores how pharmacists and social workers can work together to expand access to medications for opioid use disorder by transforming interprofessional collaboration and creating hubs of care. Through real-world case examples, participants will learn how aligning care strategies, technology, and connectivity can overcome access barriers and improve patient outcomes. Attendees will leave with practical strategies to strengthen partnerships, enhance care delivery, and reduce overdose risk.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Describe specific, evidence-based pharmacy roles in caring for patients with OUD.
  2. Recognize structural and regulatory barriers, including pharmacy deserts, dispensing restrictions, stigma.
  3. Explore collaborative pathways between social work and pharmacy.
  4. Propose actionable strategies for community-based, integrated OUD care.

Patricia (Patty) Stoddard Dare, MSW, PhD (Moderator)

Cleveland State University

Dr. Patricia Stoddard Dare currently teaches Research Methods and Substance Abuse classes at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and serves as the co-coordinator of the Chemical Dependency Counseling Certificate Program. Her research focuses on vulnerabilities experienced by children, youth and families, such as substance use disorders, mental health issues, delinquency, limiting health conditions, maltreatment, gender discrimination and food insecurity. She is currently writing on the topic of paid sick leave benefits. Her research has been cited in a wide range of national media outlets, including US News & World Report, Forbes, the Chicago Tribune, NBC News, Yahoo Finance, Reuters, the BBC, The New York Times, USA Today and the PBS program Evidence-Based Policy.
