Preparing Future Practitioners to Address Substance Misuse: A Prac-Ed Faculty Development Institute

More than 40 million Americans aged 12 or older were living with a substance use disorder in 2020, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). To address the lack of a high-quality standardized curriculum in substance use and misuse, CSWE has developed a free collection of curriculum, assessment, and field education resources for social work educators.

During this complimentary faculty development institute on June 23, social work program representatives will share three years of data detailing their experience implementing these educational resources. Schools of social work or social work programs can use these competency-based curriculum tools to enhance their coursework and to prepare the next generation of practitioners in delivering effective evidence-based substance use disorder prevention, treatment, and recovery services. This event and the compendium of resources are part of the CSWE Substance Use Disorder Expansion of Practitioner Education in Social Work initiative, made possible with funding from SAMHSA. The event will be recorded and made available on demand.

Speakers for the event include: Dr. Patty Stoddard Dare, Professor (Social Work) and Director of Women's and Gender Studies Program at Cleveland State University; Dr. Taylor Hall, Assistant Professor (Social Work) at Bridgewater State University; and Dr. Audrey Begun, Emeritus Professor (Social Work) at Ohio State University. Project evaluation activities were conducted by Dr. Amber Holbrook, Enhanced Services Consulting.
